Truck Crane

The truck craneis a mainstay in many construction job sites. The truck has versatility, especially in terms of its lifting power and roadability, makes it essential to the construction, manufacturing, mining, maintenance, and hauling industries. Aside from that, the truck crane is also used in theatrical productions, for tracking shots and the like. At its core, the truck crane is a maneuverable workhorse that can be used for different kinds of lifts in several different situations. The truck crane is most commonly used in equipment placement and major building and infrastructure projects, such as buildings, airports, bridges, and more.

Parts of the Truck Crane

The truck crane consists of the following parts:
• Boom – The crane boom is the most recognizable and essential part of the truck crane. The boom is the so-called “arm” of the truck crane, which lifts and lowers heavy materials and equipment. The hydraulic movement of the boom differs from truck to truck; the specifics of its movement can be defined for each type of operation.
• Boom Elevation – When a truck has a boom elevation it's when the boom ascends through double hydraulic cylinders, which are lowered or raised.
• Boom Swing – The truck boom swing is a large ball or roller that is attached to the carrier of the truck crane. It can swing 360 degrees in both directions and is controlled by hydraulics.
• Boom Telescope – The boom telescope is another hydraulic operation that helps the boom of the truck crane extend or retract.
• Detachable Counterweights – Detachable counterweights are placed on the back of the crane to prevent the truck crane from being unbalanced due to capacity issues. A specific formula is used to determine how much counterweight is needed with the capacity.
• Jib – The jib is an hydraulic extension of the boom. The hydraulic crane extends outward to give the boom a greater length and allows the truck crane an even higher capacity for lifting.
• Load Movement Indicator – These are lights that flash to the operator, indicating that the maximum capacity a truck crane can handle is approaching.
• Operator’s Cab or Crane Cabin – The operator’s cab is attached to the top of the rotex gear that allows the cab of the truck crane to turn. Inside the cabin are the operator’s chair, the hydraulic control panel, and some electrical equipment.
• Outrigger – The outriggers prevent the truck crane from leaning or overturning by providing it with the stability and balance that it needs to operate. The outrigger has three parts: the beam, the pad, and the float. These three parts come together to help disperse the load’s capacity and force.
• Rotex Gear – Located underneath the cabin of the truck crane, the rotex gear is operated by hydraulics. The hydraulic boom can also swivel on this gear.
• Steel Cables – These reinforced cables run through the jib and the boom of the truck crane.
• Truck Chassis – This has the capacity to carry the actual crane.

Truck Crane Versus Truck-Mounted Crane

Though both machines perform almost the same functions, the truck crane and the truck-mounted crane have one crucial difference: in the truck crane, the truck and the crane are one. Meanwhile, in the case of the truck-mounted crane, the truck and the crane are separate products. This means that the products setup for the truck crane is very minimal. The truck can simply drive up, get secure, hoist the heavy boom, and begin the work. Since there is less time spent on setup, there is more time spent on work, and projects will be completed faster. Because of this, the truck crane can save you a lot of time and money.

Advantages of Using a Truck Crane

There are many advantages to using a truck crane. It is compact, lightweight, flexible, versatile, and easy to maintain. Aerial Work Platforms and Truck Cranes

Aerial work platforms are used for various purposes. They vary in size and function, allowing users to get the right quality machine fit for their job. Here are some of the commonly used heavy aerial work platforms:
• Knuckle Boom: The knuckle boom is similar to a standard crane, except the machine folds at the knuckle near the middle, hence, the name knuckle boom. This feature allows the user to fold the machine in any direction they need. Compared to a scissor or standard crane, a knuckle boom is more flexible.
• Boom Lift: The boom lift is a machine used to reach high areas that don’t require too much maneuvering. The smallest boom lift is about 40 feet while the tallest can be a staggering 180-foot machine.
• Scissor Boom: The scissor boom is an aerial work platform that has a maximum vertical reach of 50 feet. While it has a shorter reach compared to a boom lift, its retractable feature makes it easy to store. This is perfect for contractors who don’t need the staggering reach of a boom lift and need to save up on storage space.

Boom Trucks and Truck Crane

Boom trucks are aerial work platforms attached to a truck. They are designed for easy site transportation. Mobile boom trucks are ideal for building projects because it offers the workers need to move constantly. For example, a foreman leading a bridge-building project can make use of a boom truck so workers can perform specific tasks on aerial platforms.
